How To Fix ‘Slow Download Speed On Steam’ Problem?

If the download speed on Steam is slow, then you need to follow certain troubleshooting steps to restore the downloading speed, but first, confirm if the speed is actually slow. Internet connection must be fast for Steam to download. If you are dealing with slow downloading speed, then here is what you can do:

How to make Steam download faster?

Clear the download cache

The first step should be to clear the download cache, as it can solve most downloading problems with Steam on Windows 10. Here is how you can clear the cache on Steam:

  1. Launch Steam and go to ‘Settings’.
  2. Choose ‘Downloads’ from the left panel.
  3. At the bottom of the page, you will see the ‘Clear Download Cache’ button in the right section. Click that option.
  4. A new window will appear, where you will click ‘OK’ and then, wait until the process finishes.
  5. Now, login with your credentials again along with checking if the download speed has improved or not.

Change Bandwidth Limit

In certain cases, the bandwidth limit will not coincide with your ISP, and this may alter your download speeds. If you have a stable connection, then go through these steps:

  1. Launch Steam and go to ‘Settings’.
  2. Choose ‘Downloads’ in the left panel.
  3. Under ‘Download Restrictions’, you will see ‘Limit Bandwidth’ drop-down menu.
  4. You need to set it ‘No Limit’ along with clicking ‘OK’.
  5. Resume your download.

This might be a great choice on a stable connection, but for an unstable connection, you will have to set it to the right value close to the ISP connection.

Change the download region

Steam has several servers in many parts of the world. Steam automatically detects the region through the network.

At times, the servers in your region could be cluttered, causing the problem in the download speed.

  1. Launch Steam and go to ‘Settings’.
  2. Choose ‘Downloads’ in the left panel.
  3. You will see the ‘Download Region’ section, which will have a drop-down menu below.
  4. Open the drop-down menu followed by selecting a different server.
  5. Click ‘OK’.

Note – It is not certain that changing the server will bring things to normalcy, but you need to try different servers to find out what’s best for your requirements.

Lower the disk usage

Many people who have downloaded Steam on Windows 10 have found the problem due to ‘high-risk usage’. Certain WPR items are running in the background, which may cause the problem.

To solve the issue, press the ‘Windows + R’ key to start the ‘Run’ dialog box. Enter ‘cmd’ and then, press ‘Enter’. In ‘cmd’, you need to enter ‘WPR-cancel’.

We would also like to mention that many users were able to fix the problem by disabling the ‘Connected User Experiences & Telemetry’ option.

To disable this option, open ‘cmd’ followed by entering ‘stop-service diagtrack’. If you wish to disable the start-up process, then enter ‘set-service diagtrack-startuptype disabled’.
